Habit appliance

The definition

A habit appliance is an orthodontic appliance aimed at an oral habit; the American Association of Orthodontists says tongue positioning when swallowing and thumb or finger sucking are sometimes treated with habit appliances.

Habit appliance, as the AAO uses the term

Habit appliance is a term the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) uses in its FAQ for parents: “Some patients may need help with how to position their tongue when they swallow, while others may need intervention to stop a thumb- or finger-sucking habit. These are sometimes treated with habit appliances.”

The AAO’s page on pacifiers and thumb sucking, dated August 21, 2024, places appliances after other methods: if those fail, it advises consulting an orthodontist, and the AAO says “Certain dental appliances may help keep your child from sucking on their fingers”.

The tongue crib, the AAO glossary’s named example

The tongue crib is one habit appliance the AAO’s Glossary of Orthodontic Terms defines by name: “A fixed orthodontic appliance used to help a patient stop habits or undesirable tongue forces exerted on the teeth and bone that supports the teeth.” A tongue crib is one kind of habit appliance rather than a second name for all of them.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) puts a limit on every statement about habits: “The relationship between oral habits and unfavorable dental and facial development is associational rather than cause and effect.” In the AAPD’s reading, a habit and changes in how the teeth and face develop can go together without the habit being shown to cause them.

Habit appliances on the practice’s own list

The practice names habit appliances among its tools for early treatment, in these words: expanders, Invisalign® First, braces, and habit appliances. Which appliance a child might need, if any, is decided at the examination.

When a thumb or pacifier habit starts to matter, by the AAO’s account, is answered on the children and teens page, and palatal expander, first on that same list, has an entry of its own in the glossary.
